Alaska tribe opposes asbestos

SEPTEMBER 25, 2000 Fort Yukon tribal leaders are planning to oppose a decision by the state of Alaska to allow the Air Force to bury asbestos debris in a landfill near their village. The Air Force demolished several buildings and applied for a permit to bury the debris in steel containers about a mile away from the village. But the tribal council is concered about groundwater contamination, scavenging animals, and whether or not the debris might resurface after burial Get the Story:
