Candidate supports end of tribal fishing

SEPTEMBER 7, 2000

John Carlson, a Republican candidate for Governor of Washington, wants to end tribal and non-tribal commercial fishing in order to help save the salmon.

Governor Gary Locke responded, saying Carlson's idea was too simplistic. In order to avoid dam breaching, which many tribal leaders support, Carlson's plan would involve infringing on the treaty rights of tribes in the Northwest.

The states of Washington and Oregon are required to consult with tribes when settling limits on fishing.
