It's been a long, rough journey for project Northstar but oil finally began flowing from the BP Exploration venture on Thursday.

BP ended up spending more than $700 to build the Beaufort Sea project. Lawsuits delayed its opening and enviromental groups held protests.

Nevertheless, BP has proposed another project, this one called Liberty. A final environmental impact statement is due next year.
