The company proposing to start a clay mine and kitty litter plant in Nevada defended itself from criticism on Thursday.

Oil-Dri Corp. said the project would bring jobs and $12 million to the local economy. The Chicago-based company wants to start two open pit mines to remove 7 million tons of clay in 20 years and use it to make kitty litter 24 hours a day.

Opponents immediately blasted the company for its claims. Residents of the Hungry Valley Indian Colony and the Sparks Indian Colony are among those who are fighting the project.
