Alaska Natives appeal Exxon ruling

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 2001

About 10,000 Alaska Natives, commercial fishermen, property owners and others have asked the full panel of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals to rehear their class action lawsuit against the Exxon oil company for the nation's worst oil spill.

The plaintiffs want the full court to overturn a decision made by a three-judge panel who decided that a $5 billion punitive damages award was too high. That panel sent the case back to federal court for a redetermination of the award.
