FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2001

For more than 10 years, more than 10,000 commercial fisherman, Alaska Natives and others have awaited conmpensation for the 1989 11-million-gallon Exxon Valdez oil spill.

Their hopes have now been dashed by an appeals court decision to limit the $5 billion punitive damages award against Exxon. According to lawyers, it is the plaintiffs who have already suffered the most: 567 of them have died, at least 125 fishermen may not be able to pay back loans from the state and more than 4,000 face serious debt problems.
