Opinion sought on water compact

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2001 An Oklahoma state lawmaker is asking Attorney General Drew Edmondson to issue a legal opinion about a compact the state finalized with the Chickasaw Nation and the Choctaw Nation. Rep. Clay Pope, a Democrat from Loyal, wants the A.G. to determine how extensive the tribes' rights are to the water in southeastern Oklahoma. He also wants to know how much of the water will be used downstream and if the state forfeits rights to it in case of drought. The compact would have to be approved by the state Legislature. Some of the water would be sold to users in Texas. Get the Story:
