Federal scientists probably won't launch massive efforts in the future to save endangered whales from certain death, they have acknowledged after learning the cost of an initiative ot rescue a right whale trapped in fishing line.

According to The Cape Cod Times of Massachusetts, the effort cost more than $250,000. Some federal officials believe the figure is a low estimate.

The whale in question, nicknamed Churchill, is believed to have died in September.
