Pueblo continues river restoration

Isleta Pueblo and the Bureau of Indian Affairs are continuing a joint effort to restore an area along the Rio Grande River to its natural state.

Known as the bosque, the area was hit by a fire in April 2000 that destroyed many Native trees and plants. In their place sprung weeds and other non-Native species.

The BIA is spending $200,000 for the first part of the project.

Upstream, Cochiti Pueblo wants to do some of its own restoration work along the river. Sen. Pete Domenici (R-N.M.) is trying to pass legislation to allow federal funds to be redirected to the effort.

A 1992 settlement negotiated by Domenici proscribes money to correct years of water seepage problems from a massive dam project. The project flooded lucrative farm lands and destroyed sacred sites.

The legislation would broaden the uses of money for seepage problems.
