Murkowski votes against ANWR proposal

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2001

The Senate on Monday overwhelmingly voted against a bill that would have allowed drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Included among them was Sen. Frank Murkowski (R-Alaska), a chief supporter of oil and gas development. He spent most of the day arguing why drilling is good for the country, national security and Alaska Natives.

But he said he and other Republicans decided to abandon their proposal after realizing they didn't have the 60 votes necessary to break a Democratic hold. So the chamber rejected a joint drilling, human cloning and railroad package by a 94-1 vote.

Majority Leader Sen. Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) has said drilling will get a full and fair debate in January.
