Interior drops opposition to mine

For reasons not explained by the Associated Press, the Department of Interior has dropped a number of objections to a mine in Canada near the Alaska border.

During the Clinton administration, the Interior and the Environmental Protection Agency agreed with Alaska Gov. Tony Knowles (D) that reopening the mine near Juneau could harm salmon runs. But the Interior has now changed its mind, the AP reports.

The mine, located in British Columbia, has been opposed in court by the Taku Tlingit First Nation. A provincial court has ruled in the tribe's favor, saying an environmental impact study was flawed.
