Wis. tribe supporting elk recovery

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2001 The Wisconsin State Natural Resources Board has approved a plan to reintroduce a second elk herd, an effort supported by the Ho-Chunk Nation. The board approved the recovery under the condition that lawmakers can protect cranberry farms. Cranberry growers are worried the elk could hurt their bogs. The plan would bring no more than 390 elk to Jackson County. It would join a first herd of 25 elk that has grown to 80 head. Get the Story:
