Yucca Mountain decision could come today

THURSDAY, JANUARY 10, 2002

Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham could make a decision on the Yucca Mountain project in Nevada as early as today, Congressional aides told the Associated Press.

But a dispute over the notification process to Gov. Kenny Guinn has emerged. Under federal law, Abraham is to notify Guinn of a decision within 30 days.

The state believes this means a decision would be made a month from today, for example. Others suggest it only means a formal recommendation of the actual decision would be sent to the President within 30 days.

TechCentralStation, a conservative web site with ties to the Bush administration, yesterday reported a decision could be made today. Assistant Secretary of Interior for Policy, Management and Budget Lynn Scarlett is the co-host of the site.

The project to store up to 77,000 tons of highly radioactive nuclear waste at the site is opposed heavily in the state and by area tribes.
