Bush to hear Yucca Mountain pleas

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2002

Nevada Gov. Kelly Guinn (R) will get his chance today to tell President Bush in person that that putting a national nuclear waste dump in his state "stinks."

Guinn plans to tell Bush he will vote the Yucca Mountain project. Congress would have to then resolve the dispute.

Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham last month made public his intention to recommend the site. He can send his formal notice to Bush as early as Saturday.

Joining Guinn will be Sens. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and John Ensign (R-Nev.). Along with area tribes and other state officials, the group has opposed putting tens of thousands of tons of highly radioactive nuclear waste at the site.
