Fire in and surrounding the Mescalero Apache Reservation in southern New Mexico have led the area to be declared a disaster by the state.

A 10,860-acre blaze is burning on the reservation, destroying one home, as another nearby has forced the evacuation of dozens of residents. Called the Kokopelli Fire, it was accidentally caused by hot ashes, according to state officials, and has destroyed more than two dozen homes.

The fire is almost contained as of this morning.
