Tribes take greater roles in dams

TUESDAY, MARCH 26, 2002

Tribes in the Pacific Northwest have taken greater roles in dam-related issues, seeking ways to protect their interests after years of being ignored.

The Kalispel, Nez Perce, Umatilla, Yakama and Skokomish tribes are among those taking a pro-active approach. As federal licenses for dams have expired, they have demanded, and in many cases received, protections for salmon and the environment.

The Yakama Nation is getting directly involved and wants to take over operation of a dam. The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of jointly runs a dam in Montana and can take over operations in 2015.
