Nearly three out of every four voters in Anchorage voted on Tuesday to urge Alaska state lawmakers to put a subsistence amendment on the November ballot.

Gov. Tony Knowles has proposed an amendment in order to recognize an Alaska Native and rural priority to subsistence. Currently, the state's constitution forbids preference but this conflicts with federal law.

Alaska Native corporations bankrolled the initiative, called Proposition 1. Sen. Frank Murkowski (R-Alaska), who is running for governor, said he thinks the federal law protecting Alaska Native rights is vague.
