Coon Come: Christian critic chief
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2001

Cree leader Matthew Coon Come was elected chief of Canada's Assembly of First Nations a year ago but he was already a well-known leader long before.

His battle to prevent Cree homelands from being flooded by a massive hydro-electric project drew international attention. He recalls being beaten up by the police for demonstrating against it.

Now, he's getting beat up, figuratively, on different fronts. Never one to mince words, the born-again Christian freely criticices Canada and Aboriginals alike.
