NOVEMBER 3, 2000

A trip to Las Vegas, Nevada, by the Indian Resource Council of Canada was defended by its president, who said the cost was justified because of the amount of money First Nations give to the federal government.

The council held a three-day board of directors meeting in Las Vegas. In total, it costed $24,300, which came from the council's $750,000 budget.

The council's budget comes from the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development. Part of the budget includes $175,000 for meetings just like the one held in Las Vegas.

A spokesman for the council said First Nations have given $500 million to the government, so the trip or its cost shouldn't be considered out of the ordinary.
