Riots follow band council election

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 1, 2001 Police from the Uashat-Maliotenam First Nation have arrested some band members for taking part in a riot on the Quebec reserve. Property was destroyed, the band offices were vandalized and shops were looted, said witnesses. The violence came after the results of a recent election in which Rosario Pinette defeated Élie-Jacques Jourdain. Pinette is accusing Jourdain of instigating the riot. Get the Story:
