Mi'kmaq fish beyond limits

Reg Maloney, chief of the Indian Brook First Nation in Nova Scotia, says the nation has been using a government-bought boat to fish lobster more than 10 times the legal limit.

The government bought the boat for the Mi'kmaq band last year after the Marshall Supreme Court decision upheld Mi'kmaq and Maliseet rights to fish in the maritimes. The Nation set 325 lobster traps on Saturday and could set up to a total of 800.

Department of Fisheries and Oceans say action will be taken if they confirm Indian Brook has exceeded the trap limit. Minister Herb Dhaliwal says no more than 35 traps can be fished during the summer.
