Cree way of life faces changes

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2002

Cree leaders in Canada recently signed a $3.4 billion economic development and self-determination agreement in exchange for dropping land claims of similar value.

While there is still opposition, members of various Cree bands voted to approve the agreement with Quebec. As part of the deal, traditional hunting grounds will be flooded and rivers will be altered for a major hydroelectric project.

Similar flooding in the 1970s destroyed Cree sites and the province failed to live up to its side of the agreement. But Cree members say the monetary and job benefits are the price to pay.
