FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2001 New York City is on high alert after an employee for NBC News has tested positive for the anthrax bacterium and there are reports of an evacuation at The New York Times. The employee, said to be an assistant to anchor Tom Brokaw, has a skin form of the deadly virus. The FBI and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are investigating. Meanwhile, Inside.Com reports that the third floor of the NYT office in Manhattan has been evacuated because of a mysterious letter received. But some employees are now trapped in the building because they are unable to leave, Inside.Com reports. An inhaled form of the virus killed a Florida man who worked for a tabloid. Traces of the anthrax were found in the mailroom of the group that publishes the National Enquirer. Get the Story:
