TUESDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2001 Among the numerous cases of exposure to anthrax in three states and Washington, D.C., four have been diagnosed with the rare disease. Bob Stevens, 63, died from pulmonary anthrax in Florida on October 5. Ernesto Blanco, his co-worker, had anthrax spores in his nasal passage, doctors said last week. An employee at NBC News and the 7-month-old son of an ABC News employee have also been diagnosed. Both are said to be doing well. The threat of anthrax has caused large newspapers and government offices to be among those on high alert. Mail service to the U.S. Capitol was suspended temporarily yesterday after preliminary tests on a letter sent to Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) tested positive for anthrax. More sophisticated, follwup tests have confirmed the presence of anthrax bacteria in the letter, the Associated Press reports today. Twelve offices in the Hart Senate Building have been closed today as a precaution. The U.S. Postal Service will be warning the public about the threat of biohazards in the mail system. Get the Story:
