OCTOBER 20, 2000

On Thursday, the Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded $22 million in grants to 57 tribes and Alaska Native villages.

The grants are aimed at helping eliminate drugs and drug-related crime in and near Indian housing developments. They were awarded through HUD's Office of Native American Programs and over 122 applied in 1999, more than double the amount the year before.

The grants are part of the Drug Elimination Program, a program which began in 1998 under the Anti-Drug Abuse Act. Among the activities tribes and Alaska Native villages are taking to combat drugs are hiring private security guards, funding resident anti-crime patrols, and funding drug prevention, education, counseling, and treatment programs.
