Imprisoned activist Leonard Peltier was unexpectedly transferred out of his federal prison cell to undergo jaw surgery in March, unbeknownst to his supporters and legal team.

Peltier was taken to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where Dr. E.E. Keller performed a five-hour surgery on March 21. Peltier's jaw was immobile but is now back to normal, said the doctor.
