NOVEMBER 3, 2000

A recall of about 300 varieties of taco shell and other corn products issued by Mission Foods is affecting many stores and restaurants nationwide, including WalMart, Wendys, and Albertson's.

The recall was issued because, like other companies, Mission Foods, mixed in a genetically modified version of corn not meant for human use into the food supply. The product is known as StarLink, made by the company Aventis CropScience.

The company has asked the Environmental Protection Agency to declare the food safe for humans temporarily. The EPA began a 30-day comment period on the issue earlier this week and will hold public hearings and consult with scientists before making a decision.

For more information about the proposal and how to submit comments, visit the EPA's Office of Pesticide Programs at www.epa.gov/pesticides/biopesticides.
