JANUARY 19, 2001 The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday announced new rules requiring makers of unpasteurized juices to ensure their products aren't tainted with bacteria. Fruit and vegetable juice makers must take steps such as ultraviolet light treatment or special cleaning to ensure products are free of bacteria. Bacteria contamination in unpasteurized juices have caused the death of at least one child and sickness in hundreds of others in recent years. The FDA yesterday also warned about listeria, another bacteria. High-risk consumers such as the elderly are urged to watch foods like hot dogs, soft cheeses, and smoked seafood. Get the Story:
