FDA seeks to punish genetic researcher

DECEMBER 12, 2000

The Food and Drug Administration is seeking to disqualify a University of Pennsylvania gene therapy researcher whose work resulted in the death of a student in 1999.

The FDA's disqualification would prevent James Wilson from testing experimental drugs or other products on human subjects. Wilson has until December 30 to respond in writing to a letter the FDA sent him for violating government clinical study regulations. The FDA also sent warning letters to two of Wilson's associates.

The family of Jesse Gelsinger filed a wrongful death suit against the university in September.
