APRIL 18, 2001

Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.) on Tusday said rising numbers of children who are obese and or who have diabetes led to his decision to co-sponsor a bill that will require schools in the National School Lunch Program to ban the sale or distribution of any soft drinks or sugary foods during lunch and breakfast hours.

Bingaman said consumption of soda pop and junk food is partly to blame for the rising numbers. But the ational Soft Drink Association says a sedentary lifestyle is the real culprit.

Albuquerque Public Schools (APS) has a deal with Pepsi to sell the soft drink in their schools. An APS development director said the deal brings in much needed funds to cash-strapped schools.

The Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium and the Alaska Native Health Board have launched a campaign to reduce soda consumption among Alaska Natives.
