The Shinnecock Nation of New York lost a state Supreme Court decision on Monday, which lifted a temporary restraining order on the development of a residential site in Southhampton. Yesterday, Shinnecock members gathered at the site, considered sacred, and held a prayer vigil as bulldozers continued to clear the land. A protest in February resulted in five arrests. No arrests were made this time. The project developer confirmed that an archaeologist uncovered a wampum manufacturing area. The developer has agreed to preserve this portion of the site, approximately one-third of an acre. Get the Story:
