DOJ lawyers worried about tobacco suit

APRIL 25, 2001 Lawyers from the Department of Justice Tobacco Litigation Team are worried a hiring freeze and limited funds will impair their ability to settle the government's tobacco lawsuit, according to a memo obtained by The Washington Post. In a March 12 memo to Attorney General John Ashcroft, the lawyers say the freeze and the lack of appropriate funds will limit their efforts. The lawyers say they need $57.6 million for fiscal year 2002. Ashcroft hasn't taken a position on the suit, but was an opponent during his days as Senator. Get the Story:
