JUNE 21, 2001

The Senate Appropriations Committee today will consider a spending bill that includes $84 million to compensate victims of uranium mining, mostly Navajo workers and their families.

But a spokesperson for Dine CARE said the proposal has a long way to go before becomin real. Meanwhile, Navajo miners keep dying.

The Department of Justice has run out of money for the radiation compensation program and has been issuing "IOUs" to victims.

Senators Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Pete Domenici (R-N.M.) have introduced a bill to make the payments an entitlement. An entitlement would mean the money is permanent and not subject to Congressional authorization.
