JUNE 28, 2001

Research published in today's New England Journal of Medicine offers hope for millions of Americans who suffer from heart attacks despite having normal cholesterol levels.

A blood test to identify above-normal C-reactive protein levels in the body could help determine which patients are suceptible to heart attacks. A class of drugs known as statins could be taken by these patients.

But some say the research doesn't fully prove taking the drugs will help. Not all people with high C-reactive levels develop heart attacks.

Heart diseases are the number one killeer in Indian Country.
