Tribe holds first health fair

JUNE 9, 2000 The Catawba Indian Nation of South Carolina held a health fair on Thursday, the first ever for the tribe. Lisa Martin, a dietitian who works with the tribe, said the Catawba have a 13 percent incidence rate of diabetes. At the clinic, Martin and another dietitian conducted blood sugar tests for tribal members, which showed a high number who were above acceptable levels. The Catawba are on the second year of a five-year federal diabetes grant. Get the Story:
