Existing stem cells doubted

Scientists familiar with the stem cell colonies President Bush has approved for federal funding say they may not ever prove useful.

According to the scientists, at least one-third of the 64 are young and fragile. Some are so unproven that some scientists won't classify them as stem cells.

In making his decision to extend federal funding to existing stem cell lines, President Bush earlier this month said they were more than enough to move the field foward. Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson has also said the existing ones were viable.
