Supreme Court rules against pot

AUGUST 30, 2000

The Supreme Court on Tuesday prohibited a California "cannabis club" from distributing marijuana to medical patients.

The Court's decision doesn't overrule a 1996 California state law which allows patients to grow marijuana on their own or use it for medicinal purposes. But some say the ruling indicates the Court will strike down that law, should it reach them.

The case is U.S. v. Oakland Cannabis Buyers' Cooperative, A-145.
