Uranium compensation being paid

FRIDAY, AUGUST 31, 2001

Long-overdue checks for victims of uranium exposure are being sent to Americans already approved for the program.

Many had received "IOUs" from the federal government because the compensation program ran out of money. A number are Navajos who worked in uranium mines in the Four Corners area of the southwest.

The Bush administration is seeking to delay payments to those who haven't yet qualified for the program. Three studies are being undertaken that could delay qualification and payment up to a year.
