A black mold that has infested hundreds of homes on the Turtle Mountain Reservation in North Dakota is blamed for at least seven or eight deaths.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been investigating the mold and its links to health problems. Based on preliminary data taken in July, 76 percent of homes surveyed had mold and 79 percent had water damage.

The tribe says water from two dams and a wet cycle have left homes susceptible to the mold. Sen. Kent Conrad (D-N.D.) recently visted homes on the reservation and obtained $5 million to help the tribe.

Molds can cause allergic reactions, coughing, fever and headaches. For those with asthma or weakened immune systems, it can cause serious respiratory problems.
