Research published in today's issue of The New England Journal of Medicine suggests that a new class of drugs already used to fight high blood pressure can help reduce the risk of kidney damage in type 2 diabetics.

In three studies, diabetics were given the drugs, called called angiotensin receptor blocking agents (ARBs). The drugs reduced the risk of developing kidney problems and in one case, they protected patients in early stages of kidney failure.

Type 2 diabetes is affecting an increasing number of Native Americans, with some tribes experiencing rates as high as 50 percent among adults. Diabetes is showing up earlier in young Natives as well.
