Sexual assault of women targeted

SEPTEMBER 25, 2000

Police in Alaska ans Alaska Natives are working together to find a solution to increasing numbers of rape and sexual assaults.

The recent rapes of five Alaska Native women has helped define some of the urgency on the issue. But the state has been on the high end of the FBI's rape statistics for some 20 years.

In Anchorage, Native women are 3.5 percent of the population but 45 percent of rape victims, say police.

Native women from rural areas are more trusting, say advocates, leaving them susceptible to dangerous situations.
