The Alaska Tribal Environmental Management Conference was held this week in Anchorage.

A big topic of discussion was rural sanitation. The state has made gains in improving the number of villages with adequate plumbing, going from about half of households five years ago to nearly three-quarters currently.

Despite the gains, leaders at the conference said there are still dangers to confront. Storage of water in homes and primitive sewage systems can cause hepatitis A and viral meningitis and lead to increased incidents of colds and the flu.
