BIA letters test negative for anthrax

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2001 The New Mexico Department of Health has tested 35 envelopes sent to a regional Bureau of Indian Affairs office and none tested positive for anthrax. Employees of the Albuquerque BIA office and a BIA school were sent home early one day last month after being notified they received letters from the Washington, D.C., postal facility that has handled anthrax-tainted letters. The New Mexico employees were among the 11,000 BIA and Office of the Special Trustee employees who received the letters. The OST ran its own tests and those came up negative. The letters were sent to the homes of employees by Interior Deputy Secretary J. Steven Griles. They contained a court order barring retaliation against any Interior employee who comes forward with information about the trust fund. Get the Story:
