THURSDAY, JANUARY 31, 2002

After many hours of debate in a packed room in Window Rock, Arizona, the Navajo Nation Council voted not to take over its health care from the Indian Health Service.

The vote failed 37 to 43 with one council member abstaining. President Kelsey Begaye issued a statement saying he was disappointed.

Had the resolution passed, the tribe would assume $500 million in health care costs.
