Thirty to 40 percent of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation has diabetes, according to a Connecticut health official who cites federal data.

Included among the group is tribal chairman Kenneth Reels, who said he didn't discover he had diabetes until four years ago. His family has a history of diabetes and Native Americans, in general, are at higher risk.

But according to health experts, Native Americans often wait till the last minute to seek treatment or ignore their problems.
