Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues.

In The Hoop: The Scorecard
Is it Friday already? That means its time for the weekly list of who were the movers and shakers in Indian Country and beyond.

The Winners
Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb - For receiving accolades from Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) and applause from attendees of a recent hearing. But now look what you've done. People will expect you to do good things.

Prejudice - For still thriving in Alaska and elsewhere. Where's the Rhythm Nation when you need them?

Interior nominees - For being sworn in by your boss. Now get to work!

Faith-Based Charities - Thanks to Rep. JC Watts (R-Okla.), allegedly part Choctaw, you will now be able to receive $100 tax-free! You will also get to discriminate based on religious preference while receiving federal funds. Congratulations.

The Blackfeet Nation - For being the location of the first off-shore bank. Maybe you can be responsible for keeping track of the trust fund?

The Bush administration - It turns out that the House doesn't hate you after all. Its only the Senate!

The Losers
ANWR - For not impressing the House Resources Committee, who voted this week to open you up to oil and gas drilling. Maybe you are full of (dung), too?

The Wall Street Journal - For getting into the federal recognition controversy a year too late. And despite the measured delay, you still did a horrible job.

Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.) - First you complained about Gwich'ins being Canadian. Now, you've ranted about Mexican truckdrivers. What country will be your next target? And aren't you the head of some human rights panel?

K-Go and Mike A. - Just when you thought it was safe to start lobbying again, out comes some more news about you. The aforementioned editorial was the talk of the town on Wednesday in Indian circles, too. Bring it on!

The GOP - You'll probably reach out to illegal immigrants before you reach out to Indian Country. Oh wait, aren't you doing that already? It must have slipped our mind.

Indian Schools - Although Secretary of Interior Gale Norton visited one of you earlier this week, she was more focused on her dog and pony show. Should you expect to be repaired? Well maybe five of you. But only if you are good!

In The Middle
Subsistence rights - For still existing in rural Alaska. But will the Supreme Court strike you down? Only Governor Tony Knowles holds the key to your future.

Russell Means - At least you showed up for your scheduled visit on Native America Calling. Who cares if it was 45 minutes late?

Indian rights - For being supported in Mexico. Or were they diluted? Its so hard to tell these days.
