FRIDAY, JULY 26, 2002

Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues.

In The Hoop: The Scorecard
Is it Friday already? That means it's time for the weekly list of the movers and shakers in Indian Country and beyond.

The Winners
Tribes with "Cobell" cases - Christmas came early for you this year. Now you too can expect delays by the Bush administration, incompetent federal lawyers and frivolous motions.

Judge Royce Lamberth - Everyone rejoiced when they heard you were taking on the tribal trust disputes. That is, everyone except Auntie Gale.

Zack Pahmahumie - Congratulations on being the new chairman of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation. But watch out for Mad Bear and all those RUMORS.

Tom Slonaker - Maybe if more tribes (and their lawyers) paid attention to you and followed trust law instead of Indian law, we might see some successes in and out of the courts.

The Losers
Alabama-Coushatta Tribe - We're sorry to see your casino close. We wish you luck in seeking help from Congress but don't bet on a receptive voice.

DOJ/DOI - If you're not ready to settle now, you should think about it again. It's only going to get worse with tribes in the mix.

Snakehead Fish - We never saw Secretary Gale Norton move so quickly to respond to a problem. Well, except when non-Indian farmers were denied water. And when the snowmobile industry opposed a proposed ban. And when the mining industry wants to drill land. And ...

Jeff Benedict - So much for being one issue. When you write your book about ancient bones, will you try to run for the head of National Park Service?

In The Middle
Navajo Nation - Can you win your case against Peabody? We hope so, because the one against the U.S. seems doomed.

Indian Kids - Are you better off with Indian parents? Or Jewish grandmas? We just want someone to pay attention to you.
