In The Hoop
FRIDAY, AUGUST 24, 2001

Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues.

In The Hoop: The Scorecard
Is it Friday already? That means its time for the weekly list of who were the movers and shakers in Indian Country and beyond.

The Winners
Alaska Native Subsistence - It turns out you won't be challenged in the Supreme Court. Thanks, Gov. Knowles!

Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb - For being OKIT's Newsmaker of the Year just for being named to head the Bureau of Indian Affairs (well, not exactly.) And we were holding out for an appearance by Kennewick Man.

Ho-Chunk Inc. - For receiving yet another honor. Mouse pads for every tribal member!

Activist Betty Ann Grass - For waging a battle in South Dakota and succeeding. Now if you only you could do the same for certain Washington, DC-area writers...

Non-Gaming California Tribes - For finally getting the money the state promised you. Now what?

The Losers
Baltimore Sun columnist Myron Beckenstein - For being yet another White Man to tell Indians what to do.

Washington Times Editor Wesley Pruden - For writing a stereotype-laden, racist-conjuring piece on mascots.

Secretary of State Colin Powell - For bailing out on a chance to make a statement at the World Conference Against Racism.

The Department of Interior - If so much progress is being made on trust reform, why not let yourself be investigated?

Secretary of Interior Gale Norton - For naming a dump to the national historic landmark list. And just what is so special about a school that stamped out Alaska Native culture? Is it on the tribal school priority list?

In The Middle
Churchill the Whale - Are you going to live? Are you going to die? The world waits.

Stem cells - You're young, you're unproven. But at least you have federal funding.

President Bush - You're back at the White House from your "working vacation." We didn't notice the difference.

The Puyallup Tribe of Washington - Your scandals are being played out in the press. Hey, can we get a seat at your Mariners skybox?
