TUESDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2001

A fued over farm land has led two tribes in southwestern Colombia to extreme measures.

On September 19, members of the Guambia and Ambalo tribes fought one another in a bloody battle that left four Guambia dead and 54 wounded. The fight was over 860 acres of farm land.

The problems, say Ambalo leaders, began in 1985 when the Guambia tribe asked for legal title to land. The Guambia have title to 48,400 acres and the Ambalo to 6,200 acres.
