The president of PRI, Mexico's former ruling political party, on Thursday criticized recently inaugurated President Vicente Fox for closing more military bases in Chiapas.

The leader accuses Fox of undermining the Mexican army's image. Fox has closed bases in the southern state in order to resume peace talks with leaders of an Indian-rights movement there.

Fox says that he might not be able to close all seven the bases, however, because he wants to ensure public safety. He also counters the PRI leader's criticism by saying that the Army soldiers do not want to be in Chiapas and that Indian communities have been protesting the bases.
